The success of this work is supported by the experience that our trading company has gathered over its 175 year history and by its network of business connections established over the same period. Doors once opened for imports to Europe, are now open for relief shipments of pulses, special grain, sugar, milk powder, cooking oil et al. This area of responsibility is positioned at the juncture between trade and respective development aid or development aid policy. Schlüter & Maack maintains contacts both to international relief organizations and to producers and merchants in developing countries. Schlüter & Maack conveys essential know-how through personal contacts with its local partners. It requires exact knowledge of the respective country and of ist native language in order to work independent of, and sometimes remote from, large markets. Today, Schlüter & Maack is able to satisfy nearly any request, and by that we mean world-wide. Sometimes, an agreement on the telephone with a partner on site is sufficient for this purpose. Such transactions neither permit nor require a multitude of contractual clauses. This characterizes commercial relations based on trust. A balance sheet for Food Aid can be drawn up only tomorrow. Today, a business relation to a European trading partner represents for a developing country a "window of opportunity" and tomorrow a "door to partnership" in international trade, which will later no longer require outside support. |
